Case Study

Project Overview

A closer look at the requirement, engineering approach, and final result behind this completed elevator installation.

01

Project Background

When designing a multi-story luxury villa in Chennai's upscale Anna Nagar neighborhood, architectural synergy is paramount. The client, a prominent medical professional, required a premium vertical mobility solution that would serve both convenience and aesthetic excellence. The primary challenge was integrating a fully functional elevator into a central stairwell without blocking natural light or cluttering the open-concept villa design.

Engineering Constraints & Site Survey

During our initial site survey, our engineers identified two major constraints. First, the civil contractors had already cast the foundation columns, leaving a maximum pit depth of only 150mm—far below the standard 1200mm required for conventional lifts. Second, the elevator shaft was surrounded by the main living room and family bedrooms, meaning any motor vibration or noise would severely disrupt the home's tranquility.

To address these challenges, Asco's engineering team proposed a custom Machine Room Less (MRL) panoramic glass elevator. By eliminating the machine room and utilizing a high-efficiency Gearless PMSM motor, we reduced the structural footprint to fit perfectly within the stairwell cavity. To solve the pit depth limitation, we engineered a unique low-profile car platform and sling mechanism that operates safely with only 150mm of clearance.

Design & Customization

Aesthetics were co-designed with the client's interior architect. We utilized SS 304 Mirror Gold stainless steel frames combined with floor-to-ceiling tempered laminated safety glass. The ceiling features a custom LED starlight panel, and the floor is laid with matching Italian statuario marble to blend with the villa's flooring.

Installation & Safety Protocols

Our team of IS 14665 certified installers completed the structural assembly, followed by the integration of the closed-loop VVVF drive. Safety checks were exhaustive, including a 125% overload test, free-fall safety gear activation testing, and verification of the Automatic Rescue Device (ARD). The elevator was certified compliant with all local safety norms, securing the Tamil Nadu Lift Licence promptly.

02

Project Objectives

  • Deliver a premium vertical mobility solution matching the villa's high-end glass aesthetics.
  • Ensure whisper-quiet operation below 45dB to preserve the tranquil home environment.
  • Overcome strict structural limitations of a 150mm shallow pit without altering structural columns.
  • Incorporate state-of-the-art touchless control systems and robust Automatic Rescue Devices (ARD).
03

The Challenge

The architect required an elevator that would not disrupt the villa's central staircase design and had strict limitations on the pit depth (less than 200mm available).

04

Engineering Solution

We engineered a custom MRL solution with a panoramic glass cabin that required only a 150mm pit depth, utilizing a whisper-quiet VVVF drive system to eliminate motor noise.

05

Final Outcome

A stunning architectural centerpiece that provides smooth, silent vertical mobility without compromising the home's aesthetics.
